Countries That Share Borders With Canada
March 14th 2008 03:49
Canada is the second largest country in the world.
Most of the people live within about 200 miles / 300 km of the southern border with the U.S.A., though there are some notable exceptions.
Three of the four sides of this roughly rectangular country are bounded by water: the Pacific Ocean on the west, Arctic Ocean to the north, and Atlantic Ocean on the east. The southern boundary is a man-drawn imaginary line on the land in the western half of the country, and a man-drawn imaginary line on the water (Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River) in the eastern half.
The U.S.A. is the only country that Canada has a land boundary with. The southern boundary has been called the world's longest undefended border. There is another border between Canada and the U.S.A. in the north, where Alaska attaches to the continent.
Here's a trivia question: What other countries does Canada have boundaries with?
1. France. The island group called Saint-Pierre & Miquelon after its two largest islands are French possessions found just off the south coast of the island of Newfoundland, on Canada's east coast.
2. Denmark. The Arctic islands belonging to Canada have an offshore boundary with Greenland, and therefore with Denmark.
Watch for controversies in the future as offshore resources become the focus of disputes among neighbours, even more distant neighbours from elsewhere in the circumpolar region.
